THE BEATLES

The Beatles' song ' She Loves You' was their second number one hit and outsold any previous record in history. It was written at the Imperial Hotel in Jesmond. The group had been playing at the Majestic ballroom in Westgate Road (a low-grade venue) on 26 June 1963 and had a spare day before performing in Leeds on the 28th. On Paul's initiative, he and John set about composing the song in their hotel room. This is confirmed by an eye-witness, Bernard Armstrong, one of a number of local people responding to an appeal for information by Tony Jones in the Newcastle Journal (6.6.92).
The hotel was later transformed into the imposing Imperial Swallow Hotel, but the general manager until recently, Peter Rigby, calculated that the 'Beatle' room had been No. 116 on the first floor. This and adjoining areas had been converted into a conference room. The room was eventually named after Lord Armstrong (q.v.).
