In 1943 Beaton visited the North East as a war photographer and took many pictures of Tyne shipyards, including Armstrongs at Walker and Hawthorne Leslie at Hebburn. Some two hundred photographs exist and are held at the Imperial War Museum in London under the serial number DB/1 etc. (available online). A fine shot of a female welder is DB/68.
