One of the most famous names in English furniture design, Hepplewhite seems to have been born in Ryton. His successor, Thomas Sheraton was of course born in Stockton. The name is sometimes found as Hebblethwaite, curiously enough the name given by Captain W.E. Johns to his character Ginger, originally the son of a Northumberland miner.
