RICHARD HUTCHINSON (? - 1646)

Organist and composer, Hutchinson succeeded Edward Smith (q.v.) as master of choristers at Durham cathedral and remained in the post from 1614-44. On 8 August 1627, one William Smith was paid 40 shillings 'for his painstaking in the time Mr Hutcheson, organist, was in gaol.' Hutchinson seems to have composed at least three verse anthems, but was better known, according to the minutes of a Durham Chapter meeting, for the 'frequent haunting of alehouses and divers other evil demeanours; and especially for the breaking of the head of Toby Brooking, one of the singing men of this church, with a candlestick.' He died in Durham.
