QUENTIN BELL (1910 - 1996) Bell was the son of the celebrated Bloomsbury figures Clive and Vanessa Bell. His notable biography of his famous aunt, Virginia Woolf: A biography, 2 vols came out in 1972. He was a lecturer in Art History at the Department of Fine Art, King's College (Newcastle), University of Durham from 1952 to 1959. His wife was Anne Popham, to whom George Orwell (q.v.) proposed on the day he met her in 1946. Bell's daughter Virginia Nicholson, born in Newcastle, has written of the English bohemians of the early twentieth century, while Cressida Bell, also born in the city is a noted designer.
