JOHN BRAINE (1922 - 1986) According to the Penguin book-jacket, Joe Lampton, the thrusting hero of John Braine's best-seller Room at the Top, was raised in poverty and squalor in an ugly North Country town. The novelist's pungent prose, however, took shape, not in his native Bradford, but in the peaceful purlieus of the library in Newbiggin by the Sea, where Braine worked between 1954 and 1956.
