JOHN COLLINGWOOD BRUCE (1805 - 1892)

Bruce was born in Albion Place, now Leazes Park Road in Newcastle. He taught at his father's celebrated Percy Street Academy, and was proprietor 1834-63. Otherwise he devoted his life to the study of antiquities.

Bruce wrote a number of scholarly works, but it was in 1863 that he published his famous Handbook to the Roman Wall. This work aims, through the use of wall inscriptions, to let the Romans tell their own story. Bruce's marble effigy is in St Nicholas Cathedral, his book at his feet, open at the acknowledgments page.
