MICHAEL BRYAN (1757 - 1821)

The connoisseur was born in Newcastle on 9 April 1757 and educated at the Grammar School under Hugh Moises. His first visit to London was in 1781. He married a sister of the Earl of Shrewsbury and spent several years on the continent and in London, dealing in fine art and art objects before retiring to his brother's house in Yorkshire 1804 -11.

In 1812, Bryan was again in London and began his famous Biographical and Critical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, which appeared between 1813 and 1816.
