G.D.H. (GEORGE DOYLES HOWARD) COLE (1889 - 1959)

The Oxford university lecturer and labour theorist wrote over 100 books on socialist matters and, famously, the history of working-class movements in Britain from 1789. He also wrote biographies of Robert Owen and William Cobbett (qq.v). His wife was a frequent collaborator and the two also wrote detective stories. Cole was president of the Fabian Society from 1952.

In 1913-14 he lived in Newcastle, at which time he was working closely with the Social democratic Federation.
