MARCUS DODS (1834 - 1909)

Dods was the son of the Marcus Dods (1786-1838) who was Presbyterian minister at Belford from 1810-38 and published a work 'On the Incarnation of the Eternal Word'. Like him, Marcus Dods was born in Belford and educated at Edinburgh. He was a Free Church minister in Glasgow between 1864 and 1889, in which year he became professor of New Testament Exegesis at the (United) Free Church College in Edinburgh, becoming its principal in 1907.

Besides his great services to biblical scholarship, Dods stands high among those who have sought to bring the results of their scholarship to the ordinary reader. Among his most important writings are Israel's Iron Age (1874); Mohammed, Buddha and Christ (1877); On Genesis (1882) and The Bible, its Origin and Nature (1904).
