RALPH ERSKINE (1685 - 1752) Erskine was born at Monilaws in Northumberland, the son of Henry Erskine (1624-1696) who had been Presbyterian minister in the county between 1649 and 1662, and later imprisoned in Newcastle. Ralph Erskine sympathised with and supported his brother Ebenezer, the founder of the Secession Church in Scotland. Ralph Erskine's sermons were greatly prized and many of them translated into Dutch. he also wrote poetry, including Gospel Sonnets which had gone through twenty-five editions by 1797, and Scripture Songs (collected 1754).
