THOMAS HARDY (1840 - 1928) The great novelist and poet paid two visits to the North East. In 1891 he and his first wife, Emma, stayed with friends at Kelso, visited Abbotsford and returned south via the cathedral cities of Durham, York and Peterborough. They were back at Max Gate by September 1891. On the second visit in 1909, Hardy was accompanied by his second wife, Florence. They travelled north to Edinburgh, again visiting York and Durham.
