NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE (1804 - 1864)

The celebrated American author came to Redcar (from Whitby) on 26 July 1859, in search of peace and quiet as he worked on the final draft of The Marble Faun. He stayed until early October before moving to Leamington. The 508 page manuscript was not completed until 8 November. Hawthorne's house in Redcar stands at the junction of High Street and King Street in the middle of the town. Formerly the Hawthorne Cafe, the premises at the time of writing belong to the furniture retailers Homestart.
