NY survey of the North East heritage would be incomplete without its literary context. I have therefore decided to compile an A to Z of the many writers of the past who had a significant connection with the region. The rich and varied list includes a Roman emperor, King Arthur, Beowulf, a Pope, Jean-Paul Marat, pioneering feminists - and ten authors of classic children's tales, including the creators of Biggles, Alice and the Chalet School. Here also are Chaucer, Shakespeare, Byron, Wordsworth and Coleridge, Mrs Gaskell, Dickens, Forster and Conrad, Auden and Larkin, George Orwell, Spike Milligan, Wilson of the Wizard and J.R.R. Tolkien...
