MASON JACKSON (1820 - 1903) Jackson was born in Berwick-on-Tweed and trained as a wood engraver by his brother John Jackson, Bewick's pupil and the author of a history of this art. He earned a considerable reputation by his engravings for the Art Union of London and for Knight's Shakespeare and other standard books. In 1860, he was appointed art editor of the London Illustrated News, a post he held for thirty years. He published The Pictorial Press: its Origin and Progress in 1885.
