LAWRENCE OF DURHAM (d. 1154)

Lawrence was a Benedictine monk at Durham. He became prior in 1147 and Bishop of Durham in 1153. He travelled to Rome for his consecration, but died in France on the way home.

Lawrence was a pleasing poet, who wrote in Latin. His Hypnognosticon is mainly a versification of scriptural material, but he also added some poetic dialogue directed against the Scot, William Cumin, who made tenacious efforts to take over the see of Durham on the death of Geoffrey Rufus in 1140., keeping out the next bishop for sixteen months. Lawrence's Consolatio de Morte Amici in mixed prose and verse, is in the manner of Boethius' celebrated sixth century De Consolatione Philosophiae.
