LAURIE LEE (1914 - 1999)

In 1942, Lee travelled in the North of England and did a stint at the coal face in Haig Pit on the Cumbrian coast. He then journeyed to Durham by bus, and played the Bach double violin concerto with a youth organiser there. He was charmed by the city. Later, Lee had dinner in Newcastle with E.D. Young, a 'fat bachelor father of the city'.
