THOMAS WALTER MANSON (1893 - 1958)

The biblical scholar was born in North Shields. He was educated by his father and then at Tynemouth Municipal High School and Glasgow University before being ordained at Howard Street church, North Shields. Manson worked in Bethnal Green, London before marrying Nora Wallace, the daughter of a North Shields master butcher and taking charge of the church at Falstone, Northumberland. There he produced his first book The Teaching of Jesus (1931). This successful work led to his recognition as a New Testament scholar. He was appointed to a professorship at Oxford in 1932, and later at Manchester from 1936 until his death.

Manson gave lectures throughout the world and received many honours. His books were not numerous but included The Church's Ministry (1948) and The Servant-Messiah (1953). Manson also worked on the preparation of the New English Bible.
