HENRY SETON MERRIMAN (1862 - 1903)

Merriman, the pseudonym of Hugh Stowell Scott, was born in Newcastle at 16 Rye Hill. He abandoned a career at Lloyd's in order to travel and write, producing a series of stirring novels, often with foreign settings - perhaps the most famous being the Napoleonic Barlasch of the Guard (1903). He did not forget his roots, however, and in July 1901 he published a story in the Northern Counties Magazine, which features a Tyne-built ship, the Giralda, some Geordie speech and 'the prettiest girl in South Shields'. Merriman's great popularity is shown by the publication of a memorial edition of his works in 1909-10, comprising fourteen volumes.
