The famous humorist and author of Puckoon contracted a liaison with the artist Margaret Maughan, who had met Milligan back-stage after his performance in The Bed-Sitting Room at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle. Their son, James was born in Newcastle in 1976. Milligan would often visit Margaret in Seahouses when he was working in Newcastle or Edinburgh.

Margaret Maughan was living in Hexham in 2003, when she attended the Durham Literature Festival with her son James Maughan-Milligan.
