JAMES MITCHELL (1926 - 2002)

Mitchell was the son of a shipyard worker. Educated at the Boys High School in South Shields he became an Oxford MA and afterwards worked variously in shipyards, the travel industry and the civil service. He taught at Jarrow Grammar School and the Sunderland College of Art. He also eventually became mayor of South Shields.

Mitchell’s writing career began with a novel Here’s a Villain in 1957. More novels and screenplays followed until in 1967, he wrote a play for ABC’s Armchair Theatre called A Magnum for Mr Schneider in which an agent called David Callan made his first appearance. This led to a notable TV series (1967-72) in which Edward Woodward played Callan. James Mitchell also created and part-wrote BBC’s memorable When the Boat Comes In.
