RICHARD OF HEXHAM (fl. 1129 - 1154) Richard, Prior of Hexham, wrote Brevis Annotatio, a history of the church of Hexham from AD 674 to 1138, for which he borrowed from Bede, Eddius and Simeon of Durham (qq.v.). The valuable chronicle for which he is famous covers the years 1135-1139, including the rising of King Stephen and the Battle of the Standard near Northallerton in 1138. Richard's son John (c. 1160-1209) , also Prior of Hexham, continued the chronicle until the end of Stephen's reign in 1154. His chronology tends to be wayward at times.
