RICHARD SOUTHERN (1912 - 2001)

Southern was born at 39 Bishops Road, Benwell, Newcastle, the son of a butcher. He attended the Royal Grammar School and Balliol College, Oxford. He was Chichele Professor of Modern History 1961-69 and President of St John's College 1969-81. He was knighted in 1974.

His pioneering The Making of the Middle Ages (1953) made his reputation and was translated into many languages. Southern was arguably our finest mediaeval historian.
