JOSEPH STEVENSON (1806 - 1895) Stevenson was born in Berwick and began his education at Witton-le-Wear school before going on to Durham School and Glasgow University. He was back in Berwick in 1828 preparing for the Presbyterian ministry. He entered the manuscript department of the British Museum in 1831 and became librarian to the Dean and Chapter at Durham for a time. Stevenson published a great many historical works for the Roxburghe Society and the Surtees Society, and as the proposer (in 1856) and one of the editors of the Rolls series, he was pensioned by Gladstone. He published works on John Wycliffe (q..v.) in 1885 and Marie Stuart (1886)
