Porter was born in Burton on Trent. He became managing director of Newcastle Breweries, which had been formed in 1890 when the John Barras Brewery joined with three others, using the 'Blue Star' as their trademark. It was Colonel Porter who introduced the world-famous Newcastle Brown Ale on 25 April 1927. .
