Born at 3 Taylor Street, Darlington, Willie only entered the World Billiard Championship twice and won on both occasions. His break of 2743 still stands. He deplored the introduction of the 'nursery cannon', where the balls are nursed along the cushion. He didn't care for snooker, but reached two world finals anyway.
