HENRY CLAY WORK (1832 - 1884)

Work was a printer and song-writer of Middletown, Connecticut, who composed, among much else, the celebrated 'Marching Through Georgia'. Work, it seems, heard of the odd incident when the grandfather clock in the George Hotel at Piercebridge stopped the instant its owner died. This resulted in the song 'My Grandfather's Clock' which:
'...stopped short - never to go again/ When the old man died'.
